Easy To Use Home Monitoring Service
20th Sep 2007

(REVIEW)

HomeCamera.com is intended to be the world’s easiest-to-use home monitoring service.

Most folks don’t realize just how incredibly difficult it is to set up a surveillance camera that is accessible over the Internet. People are so accustomed to chatting using their webcams, they tend to think, “well, if I can use my webcam on my MSN or AOL chat, then it can’t be difficult, can it?” Add to this the glitzy advertising by the wifi camera companies, and folks think it’s all plug-and-play.

So here’s the thing: if you’re a networking guru, if you understand what Network Address Translation is, if you understand how the global DNS system works, what a private IP is and what a public IP is, how Dynamic DNS works, and how Port Forwarding works on your home router, then, yes, for YOU, setting up an Internet camera is easy.

For the rest of us – perhaps about 99.9% of Internet users – our eyes start to glaze over when we hear terms like NAT, punching holes through firewalls, etc. HomeCamera has been built for people like us – everyday folks who use the Internet and would perhaps like to monitor our home, watch over our pets while we’re at work, or see what our toddler is up to when we’re not home.

HomeCamera works with any Windows XP or Vista PC, using any broadband connection, using any webcam (that’s right – nothing new to purchase), makes our cameras accessible worldwide (so we can monitor our homes even when we’re on vacation!), and, best of all, for a limited time, it’s totally FREE! The people at HomeCamera say, on their site, “HomeCamera is completely free during our beta period. We want you to know that we appreciate your time and help. You have our word that when we do go commercial, your service will NOT be terminated even if you do not subscribe to a paid account.”

The service includes features like motion detection (pictures and videos can be sent to your email or mobile phone anywhere in the world) and automatic scheduled recording (so, for instance, you can set up your camera to take pictures every 5 minutes and save them on the server for later access). They also offer 24x7 telephone and Web-chat customer support.
